Dancing Lights: Capturing the Magic of the Aurora Australis

Witnessing and photographing auroras has been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember. I love to watch the stars glimmer in the night sky and the idea of swirling some colour into the mix like a Van Gogh masterpiece always fascinated me.

One night, with an aurora forecasted and dinner plans on the horizon, I decided to bring my camera along, just in case. Throughout dinner, I kept peeking out the window, much to the amusement of my friends. They teased me for it, but I couldn't shake the feeling that something extraordinary was about to happen.
As we returned home and stepped out of the car, the night sky exploded with colour. Pink, green, and even a hint of yellow danced across the stars. I was so excited that I could barely think straight as I set up my camera. This was it – an aurora in central Victoria, overpowering Melbourne's usual light pollution.
It was surreal.
Despite the new camera and system, and the challenge of shooting in the dark, I relied on my night photography experience. Composing shots in the middle of a town, rather than my usual natural landscapes, pushed me to think creatively.
Reviewing the photos was thrilling. With my new camera's higher resolution, I became more meticulous about my choices. Editing these images three or more times, exploring changes to my style, was a joy. Each image was a testament to the magical night, different from anything I'd captured before, giving me goosebumps every time I looked back through the album.
Through this collection, I hope to convey a sense of marvel. Seeing an aurora so vividly this far north was a testament to the magnitude of the event. It was a once-in-a-lifetime phenomenon, forever dancing through the memories of everyone who witnessed it. It speaks to nature's power to captivate and unite us.
